Of Prosper Devas it might be said that he was, notwithstanding his name or his ironic lack of material wealth, a successful man. At least eventually.
Early artistic exposure to his father, Anthony Devas, a society portrait painter, should have given him scope for his own creative expression but, looking back, he realised that “there wasn’t room for two stars” in the Devas household. In addition to Anthony frowning on his children’s artistic development, there was added tension in the form of Caitlin Thomas, wife of Dylan and the sister of Anthony’s wife, Nicolette (née Macnamara).
Augustus John, the painter, was a surrogate grandfather, and Rupert Shephard, another artist, became Prosper’s stepfather after Anthony’s early death.
Propser delighted in all aspects of design, and in recent years, spent a lot of time creating wonderful hand drawn maps.
